Tastings - Broo, Lager
Broo Lager (Victoria) - This beer has a slightly different take on the 'standard' lager format. With subtle hints of honey and an after-taste of wheat, it would be a very pleasant drink to have on a warm afternoon. I probably wouldn't recommend this beer as a 'session' beer as the dense wheaty after-taste may leave your tongue a little parched, but make no mistake, with its light, creamy head and interesting flavour, it is a well crafted beer.
Beef: Likes: MALT (and dark malt at that), creamy texture, chocolate/caramel.
Dislikes: overuse of hops, overly complicated tasting beers/mixing styles of beer (ie Hahn Commemorative Ale).
Summer - Little Creatures Bright Ale, Boag's St George (with lolly banana), Faro
Winter - Guinness, Chocolate Stout/Porter (Rogue's/Holgate), Brewdog Tokyo
Early Spring/Late Autumn - Abbey Ales/Trappist, Scotch Ale (Moonshine)
Sessional Beers - Toohey's Old, Cooper's Pale
Favourite Beer Pubs/Stores - Wheatsheaf Hotel, Adelaide (Australia). Brugs Beerjte, Brugge (Belgium). Kulminator, Antwerp (Belgium), Royston, Melbourne (Australia), Slowbeer (Richmond), City Beer Store (San Francisco), Bier Spezialtaten Laden (Berlin)
Favourite Beer Experiences/Events - St Patrick's Day (1999, 2008), Australia Day, Pix Patisserie (Portland, Oregon, 2009), Moo Brew Tour (Hobart, Tasmania, 2010), Belgian Beer Weekend (Brussels, 2010), My first day working in a brewery for Mountain Goat (Richmond, Victoria, March 2011), anytime trying out beers with friends.
Worst Beers: Foster's, 'Sex in a Canoe' Lagers (US, Mexico. Wherever)
Stass: Like all types of beer* (*there are a few exceptions). Sometimes it's an ale, sometimes a stout and sometimes it's a larger. Is willing to give anything a try and enjoys tasting something new.
A good beer to Stass is one that sets out with a clear goal in mind and achieves that. Whether that goal is to be a thirst quenching beer to be had around the barbecue with a few mates, or to explore the depth of flavours in a detailed scotch ale.
3 boutique beers Stass likes (but not limited to):
- Grand Ridge, Supershine (Victoria, Australia)
- Blond, Triple Karmeliet (Belgium)
- Moo Brew, Dark Ale (Tasmania, Australia)
3 everyday beers Stass likes at the moment:
- Little Creatures, Bright Ale (Western Australia)
